The Newcomers: Finding Refuge, Friendship and Hope in an American Classroom is by Colorado Book Award-winner Helen Thorpe. The book chronicles the lives of 22 newly-arrived immigrant teenagers fleeing political cataclysms across the globe as they get adjusted to life in the U.S. at Denver’s South High School. The Denver Post called it “masterful.” Following our Social Justice Book Club’s recent discussion of the Newcomers, we are honored to have the author of the book visit to discuss the book and the experiences she had while researching it. Ms. Thorpe also wrote Just Like Us, which profiled four young women in Denver and the challenges they faced due to their own and their families’ immigration status.
