Meet Our Minister
Rev. Jeannie Shero

Rev. Shero joined the ministry team of First Universalist as an Assistant Minister in July of 2010. The congregation ordained her on January 30, 2011, and voted to call her as an Associate Minister on February 26, 2012 and as Senior Minister on May 15, 2016. As Senior Minister, Jeannie is both minister and CEO of the church. Prior to 2010, Jeannie worked as a hospice and hospital chaplain for 5 years.
Jeannie comes to the ministry with a vision for shared ministry and a commitment to partnership and collaborative congregational leadership. She finds the experience of shared ministry to be rewarding and challenging in positive ways.
Jeannie completed her Master of Divinity degree at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. While at Iliff, Jeannie actively participated in Living into Covenant, an in-care program of the Mountain Desert District of Unitarian Universalist Association. Following graduation, Jeannie joined the Steering Team of Living into Covenant, holding the portfolio of supporting students in discernment. She served as the Student Liaison for Unitarian Universalist students at Iliff and Naropa University and ministerial interns working in the Boulder-Denver area. From this role, Jeannie held a position as an adjunct faculty member at Iliff. The work of supporting ministers in formation is uniquely rewarding, and is part of Jeannie’s ongoing commitment to serve our denomination.
Jeannie is committed to social justice and social change. She served on the Executive Council of The Freedom Fund from 2010-2014, and is actively involved in work for justice in Denver through Together Colorado, Showing Up for Racial Justice, and the Unitarian Universalist Faith Leader Council.

Aaron is serving First Universalist as a Ministerial Resident in the 2016-17 church year. Aaron completed his Master of Divinity degree at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. He completed a clinical pastoral externship at the University of Colorado Hospital where he served primarily the rehabilitation, orthopedic, and burn units. He is excited to walk in companionship with the congregation at First Universalist.
Aaron comes to ministry from a previous career in law, where he served as a deputy district attorney and owned a law firm practicing mainly criminal defense. He served in the Peace Corps in Mali. He holds a law degree and a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Denver. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Creative Writing.

Elizabeth is serving First Universalist as a half-time ministerial intern in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 church years. Elizabeth is a student at the Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, IL expecting to graduate with a Master of Divinity degree in 2018 at the completion of internship. They are very pleased to be joining the congregation of First Universalist and the ministry team on this journey.
Prior to entering seminary, Elizabeth worked as an organizer with environmental and Latinx community projects in Western North Carolina and Guatemala. They participate in work on climate change, anti-racism, and disaster relief with groups like the UU Ministry for Earth, Greenpeace, Journey Toward Wholeness, and Islamic Relief.
Elizabeth lives with their family in Lakewood, CO. Their interests include rereading all of Octavia Butler’s novels, weaving, playing Ingress, and climbing rocks, trees… and the occasional bridge.

Susan has served in a variety of roles in education. Her background includes creating marketing and collateral materials for annual events and branding a student loan servicer. Her skills include project management, strategic marketing, graphic design, advertising, publications, budget management and web maintenance.
An advocate for children, Susan started and ran a school library, managed an after-school tutoring program and has been a Big Sister. She has a penchant for the arts and enjoys traveling. She has a grown son and lives with her husband and four cats.

Jessica has been a member of First Universalist since 2008, and became our Communications Coordinator in February 2016 after serving two years on our Faith Formation & Religious Education team as the Childcare Coordinator and caregiver. Before joining our staff, Jessica taught English as a Second Language to adults for 11 years and served as a docent in Denver Public Library’s Community Technology Center. A native of Central Illinois, Jessica has lived in Denver since 2006 and considers it her new hometown. She lives with her partner Scott and their son Emerson. Jessica’s interests include working toward social justice, exploring new places, and enjoying Colorado’s sunshine.

Leigha grew up in Murfreesboro, TN. She moved to Ohio and attended Bowling Green State University Firelands and received an associates degree in Human Services. She looks forward to returning to college in the future. Leigha was pleasantly surprised to learn about Unitarian Universalism shortly after moving to Colorado. She is grateful for a community that encourages personal spiritual exploration and educating all ages about different beliefs and the UU Seven Principles. Having two children of her own, Leigha is ecstatic for them to grow up in such an inclusive and compassionate church home. When she is not working or homeschooling, she enjoys reading sci-fi and fantasy novels, drinking tea, and spending time with her family. Claire grew up in Denver, and attended Arapahoe High School, before moving to Iowa for six years as a young adult. Claire and her family has been attending First Universalist since 2013, and she joined the FFRE staff team as a Program Assistant in 2015. She enjoys a variety of adventures like traveling, snowboarding, and flying; as well as adventuring vicariously through books. Claire’s children are looking forward to growing up in the congregation and learning about Unitarian Universalism, as well as gaining a broad perspective on other religions. Building connections with all of our First Universalist families is Claire’s favorite part of working with the Faith Formation and Religious Education team.

Vanessa grew up in Georgia and moved to Colorado with her husband Jay in 1998. She started coming to First Universalist in 2001 soon after her daughter Zoe was born. Her son Zade was born in 2003 and also attended the nursery at First Universalist before the family moved to California for almost 2 years. They returned to their beloved community in 2006 and have been active in it ever since. Prior to joining the Faith Formation & Religious Education team as the Middle School Coordinator for grades 6-8, Vanessa taught English at Douglas County High School. She remains involved with the Care & Connections Ministry, Multigenerational events, Women’s Circles, New Moon Meditation group, and church campouts in the summer. She is grateful for this wonderful community where she has always been encouraged to explore her own spirituality and in which she and Jay have been blessed to raise their children. Her interests include reading, writing, cooking, traveling, listening to and supporting live music whenever possible, and chasing after their energetic dog Rocky.
FFRE High School Coordinator (YRUU)
A native of Wisconsin, Angie moved to Denver in 2012 with her husband, Ted, after living in Austin, Texas for a decade. Angie holds a B.A. in Theatre & Dance (emphasis in Stage Management) from the University of Texas at Austin, and has done extensive coursework in Women’s & Gender Studies, emphasizing in Race, Gender, and Sexuality in the Media. Angie has been a member at First Universalist since 2014 and spent two years as an 8th Grade Our Whole Lives facilitator before joining the FFRE staff in 2016. Angie and Ted enjoy hiking, brewery tours, and attending Colorado Avalanche games. She looks forward to building strong connections between the YRUU program and the larger congregation

John is a conductor and singer originally from St, Louis, MO who has been with First Universalist since 2004. John received his Bachelor’s in Music Performance from Truman State University in 2000, then moved to Boulder to pursue a Master’s in Music at CU-Boulder, which he completed in 2003. He was the Choir Director of the Spirituals Project Choir from 2007-2012, the UUA’s General Assembly Music Coordinator from 2009-2010, and the Music Director at several more traditional churches. Currently, John is an Affiliate Professor of Voice and Choir at Regis University. He is a member of UUMN, NATS, NANM, and ACDA.
John is happily married to his wife, Christmas and spends his free time with his beautiful children Nicholas and Naomi.

Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, Sarah Libert began studying piano at the age of six. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa, where she graduated with honors. She then completed her Master’s at CU-Boulder, working as a graduate assistant, accompanying the CU opera and teaching class piano. Sarah has been the pianist and accompanist at First Universalist since 2004, and started working with Membership as the Welcoming Coordinator in 2009. She also teaches private piano lessons.
