Faith in Action

Peace, Justice, and Sustainability
Unitarian Universalism is a justice-centered Religion. We continue our tradition of Conscience and Action:        World Gift Market

• through the work of our Social Justice Task Forces,
• by dedicating one Sunday a month to a focus on a unique Social Justice theme,
• through annual programs and events built on our values of Social Justice.

We Stand for Equality

  • Our Gay Rights Task Force works to eliminate discrimination against lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and gay (GLBT) people.
  • We have a Human Rights Task Force which works to encourages people to act when emergency crises happen on both a national and international level.
  • First Universalist provides tutors to the Native American Multi-Cultural Education School, Inc. (NAMES, Inc.) which serves all who need to improve their education, increase their career opportunities, and build their leadership potential on their walk in this world of many cultures.

We Work to House the Homeless, Feed the Hungry, and Care for the Sick

  • The Health Care Task Force recognizes the right of all individuals to received the services and treatment they need to lead healthy, dignified lives, regardless of their ability to pay, the social stigma attached the services they need, or the illnesses they suffer.
  • The First Universalist Refugee Assistance Coalition (FURAC) has helped two families from Burma (now called Myanmar) relocate and plant their roots in the Denver area. We are working to bring more families here soon.
  • We collect donations of food, clothing and money to support people and families in need through the Inter-Faith Community Services.
  • Members of our congregation provide dinners for homeless and runaway youth through Urban Peak - Denver’s Homeless Teen Shelter.
  • On Sunday morning, you can buy a greeting card to support the Gathering Place – Denver’s only daytime center for homeless women and children.

We Educate and Work to Improve the Environment

  • Members of our church began the Green Team which seeks to reduce resource and toxin consumption with a community building model that educates and supports citizens in taking action to practice more environmentally sustainable lifestyles.
  • Each year our church hosts an Earth Day Fair in Magna Carta Park that features presentations by sustainable-living exhibitors, information on renewable energy, as well as interactive and educational booths for people of all ages. The Fair is held in June to remind us that our work for the Earth is a year round commitment.
  • First Universalist is committed to completing the steps for Green Sanctuary accreditation.

We Respect Your Right to Choose

  • The Freedom Fund offers counseling and assistance to low-income women considering abortion.
  • The End-of-Life Task Force serves as a “go-to” source of information on end-of-life issues including how to fill our advance health care directives (living wills) and providing information on current legal options for end-of-life care.
