The Freedom Fund seeks to ensure that all women have equal access to reproductive rights.
Our work is based on the principles of freedom, equality, and the right to choose.
Reproductive freedom is under siege, but The Freedom Fund is part of an effort to empower women to make their own choices. Reproductive choice must be protected. Information and quality health care must be made available and financially accessible.
The Supreme Court made abortion legal in 1972, but many politicians, courts, churches and private groups work to make this essential health care service unavailable and inaccessible to women. Low-income women are especially disadvantaged.
The First Universalist Church established The Freedom Fund in 1984 in response to a vote by Colorado citizens that ended Medicaid funding for abortions. The Freedom Fund provides information about options available for a crisis pregnancy in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. We also provide financial assistance and referral to safe and legal services for low-income women who decide to end a pregnancy.
The Board of The Freedom Fund provides direction and oversight of this social-justice ministry and raises funds to enable us to serve the many women who seek our assistance.
Our clients
Women experiencing a wide variety of circumstances turn to The Freedom Fund. Many have children and cannot bear additional financial and emotional stress upon their family. Some clients are victims of domestic abuse or are victims of rape. Others lack proper or complete information to prevent pregnancy. They come to The Freedom Fund in crisis and needing support, information and assistance. We help.
Providing care for the whole woman
Nationwide, over 100 funds provide financial assistance for abortions. Only The Freedom Fund provides complete information to each woman we help so she can make an informed decision about her pregnancy and avoid unplanned pregnancy.
Every woman is screened to assure that she meets our criteria for assistance. Those who do not are referred to other resources in the community.
Staff members support each woman holistically, providing information about other services and resources that are pertinent to the challenges she faces. General information about contraception is provided to every client.
Staff members help each woman explore her options. We support the decision she makes. If she chooses to continue her pregnancy, we provide referral so she can have the healthiest pregnancy possible.
Clients who decide to have an abortion receive a voucher from us to cover a portion of the cost of the procedure.
